How to Care for Eyelash Extensions

fthm7How to Care for Eyelash Extensions

Eyelash extensions give you those long, lush, wow-factor lashes you’ve always wanted. Now, you just need to know how to care for them properly to keep them looking great. Here are six things to know:

The first 48 hours are important.

When your eyelash extensions are new, they require a little bit of extra care. All of those tiny, fine fibers have been glued to your existing lashes using a special adhesive. Like any glue, the adhesive used on your eyelash extensions takes time to dry. Though it only takes about 2 hours to place your new lashes, it can take up to 48 hours for the adhesive to dry fully. In the meantime, you’ll need to be careful, or you could end up making your new lashes clump or you could ruin them completely.

Keep lashes dry for 48 hours.

Avoid doing anything that will get moisture on your new lashes: steam rooms, intensive workouts, hot baths and showers. Moisture and heat will reactivate the adhesive and your lashes make your clump together.

Don’t pull or tug on your lashes.

You’ll be temped to touch or brush your new lashes, because they’ll feel so luxurious. Avoid the temptation! Try to leave them alone, and you’ll keep them looking great. If you decide that you want them removed, don’t do it yourself! Have a professional remove them for best results. Also, avoid rubbing your eyes whenever possible—it puts strain on your new lashes.

Avoid oil-based products.

Oil breaks down the adhesive and ruins your lashes. Keep lashes away from shampoos, conditioners, lotions, face washes and any other oil-based product. You can use mascara with your eyelash extensions, but double-check to make sure it doesn’t contain oil (most don’t, but check to be safe).

Don’t use an eyelash curler.

You won’t need one anyway, because your new lashes are pretty and curly without any extra help! Eyelash curlers pull on your extensions and causes stress on the adhesive bonds.

Style lashes and apply extension conditioner.

Your eyelash extensions do need some daily maintenance. When you get out of the shower, shape your eyelashes by gently brushing them to fan out the fibers and avoid clumping. You can also blow them with a hair dryer set to “cool,” held at arm’s length from your face. Apply eyelash extension conditioner, which will keep your new extensions looking full, vibrant and healthy. Apply it daily for best results.
